Grades 1-3 48 pages Enchanted Lion Books March 2007 Hardcover

The lead character in This is a Poem That Heals Fish is a bored little boy named Arthur who has a pet fish named Leon. Leon doesn’t look well, and Arthur is sure that his pet is bored sick. He runs to his mother and asks her for help. After some thought, Arthur’s mother tells him the best thing to do is to write a poem. Unfortunately, Arthur does not know what a poem is. So, like all curious children, he asks everyone he meets – “What is a poem?” Everyone has a different yet equally confusing and evasive response. Finally, at the end of the day, he writes all the responses down only to find that he has just written a beautiful poem!

This is a Poem That Heals Fish is a good choice for read-aloud situations and is encased in a bright, fully illustrated high-gloss slipcover. Groups or families can share ideas and discuss projects they can do as well. Very large font and images are ideal for holding up to groups. Oliver Tallec illustrated this hardcover book using bold and colorful images that look best from a distance.

Author Jean-Pierre Simeon, illustrated by Olivier Tallec clearly communicates that poetry is all around us and is part of the everyday moments of our lives. He is an accomplished poet, novelist and dramatist, as well as a professor of modern languages and literature who has been published regularly since 1984. He has also worked with film and theater festivals. This is a Poem That Heals Fish is his second children’s book. Originally published in French, it was recently translated and released by Enchanted Lion Books and printed in China. Unfortunately, there is no information in the use of environmentally sustainable printing options, such as recycled content, which is a shame.
