Darrin Lunde, a mammalogist at the American Museum of National History, returns with another great book geared towards budding naturalists. Hello, Baby Beluga is a little book that presents the life and habitat of young beluga whales in a simple question-and-answer format.
Each two-page spread features a closeup view of a baby beluga accompanied by a question the beluga answers itself. For instance, an illustration of the baby beluga by her mother accompanies a question: “Baby Beluga, what do you look like?” In response, we learn that she is five feet long and has dark gray skin that will turn white as she grows into an adult. The Q&A format allows the author to pack a lot of information about beluga whales into a slender book.
The illustrations by Patricia J. Wynne are realistically rendered but cute enough to appeal to young children.Hello, Baby Beluga is a good choice for toddlers and preschoolers who are interested in learning about animals.
