Bird seems to know that Hippo needs a friend, because he doesn’t go away when asked. He tries to make his potential friend smile by pretending to be a hippopota-mustache on Hippo’s face and an umbrella to keep him dry. Hippo tries to avoid Bird by holding his breath and going underwater, but when Hippo resurfaces and Bird lands on his head, he asks, “What do we do now?”
Bird keeps Hippo safe from hungry bugs and scary flash-flood rainstorms. He never hears a thank-you, but when he realizes that Hippo has his own way of showing he cares, their friendship becomes obvious to all the animals who drink at the watering hole.
Mixed media, pencils and digital color illustrations show off Bird’s silly side (he pretends to be a fountain and a pirate) and Hippo’s booming voice. Often when Hippo opens his mouth, the dialogue associated with his words appear in white fonts. The use of onomatopoeia on the page allows the reader to insert sound effects into the read-aloud.
