To paraphrase a certain Kevin Costner baseball movie quote, "If you give it flaps, kids will read." That's as true for Hide and Peek, a PBS Kids board book featuring Hideki the frog on an alphabetical guessing adventure, as it is for any
other lift-the-flap book.
Four or five familiar animals and objects are scattered on each two page spread, labeled with a letter flap and a rhyming clue to each letter's word. Between Andy Bennett's bold graphic illustrations and
Sherry Gerstein's sometimes inspired, sometimes strained
rhymes, kids should have no trouble guessing the words even
before lifting the flap. But the repeated imagery
paired with the word spelled out under the lifted flap,
children's word/letter/visual connections will be reinforced
in a non-patronizing way.
As with the other titles in the Brighter Minds Media PBS
Kids series, the front cover of Hide and Peek labels its intended age target and conceptual theme (3-5 and letters, for this one). The back cover lists developmental benefits (talking, reading, and word games in Hide and Peek), and the last page inside
runs down "Ideas for Parents and Caregivers," including the basics of letter and word awareness and several easy on-the-go or at-home games and activities. This is a winning educational tool for parents and early childhood teachers masquerading as good, cheerful fun for kids
