The Secret History of Giants
by Ari Berk
Ages 7-12 48 pages Candlewick September 2008 Hardcover

Merlin’s name is on it. So are those of William Shakespeare and Francis Bacon. But the newest name to be added to the list is Professor Ari Berk. All these men are Magisters and Scribes belonging to The Order of the Golden Quills: they are the guardians of long-forgotten knowledge. For thousands of years they have been archiving, collecting and, most importantly, sharing information about the Secret Folk. In his newest book, Professor Ari Berk focuses on one of the oldest and HUGEST races belonging to the Secret Folk - the Giants.

Open The Secret History of Giants and become immersed in another time. Giants built the mountains, caused volcanoes to explode, cracked the earth’s surface and transformed landscapes. They have left behind their giant footprints, their great teeth and many old stone places. Giants have had human friends, but evidence shows humans have not been kind to the giants. Over the years, humans have ruined the lands and destroyed some of the ancient places sacred to many giants. By sharing all he knows about the giants, Professor Ari Berk hopes to instill a sense of wonder to our world again and a new respect for the giants.

The Secret History of Giants gives readers a glimpse into The Hall of Giants where many giant artifacts are protected. This book also describes the life cycle of giants, shows a typical giant’s home, and explains how giants worked, dressed, and relaxed. With many booklets to open, pages to unfold and vignettes to study, this book should answer many questions young readers may have about giants. Some of the information many even surprise young readers. They’ll find out about the giant shoe that was turned into a house, that giants' hairstyles are related to their heredity rights, and that the phrase “falling in love” originated with giants.

The Secret History of Giants is wonderfully designed. The cover illustration and attached tasseled bookmark are attention grabbers. The pages inside are thick and colored to look ancient. Borders surround the text, illustrations vary in style, topics change with the turn of a page, and decorative fonts are used for subtitles and headings. Although there is a lot of information inside, the text is not overwhelming to read. The paragraphs are short and the sentences descriptive of what readers see on the page.

By studying this book of giant lore, younger readers will never look at mountains or depressions in the land the same way again. By the time they finish, they will have the knowledge to see and know the giants just as well as Professor Ari Berk.
