Ages 0-3 8 pages Chronicle April 2008 Board book

Hide-and-Seek: Big Trucks and Diggers is a second addition to Chronicle Books’ new line of interactive board books designed to provide children with the opportunity to play and learn at the same time. Here children are presented with basic information about different types of construction equipment, and they have the opportunity to pull the partially-hidden machinery out from behind the other pages.

Unlike the related Chronicle book on dinosaurs of the same format, this book seems more like a thinly-veiled advertisement than a book designed to entertain and educate. Not only is Caterpillar, a leading manufacturer of heavy equipment, listed prominently on the cover and clearly labeled as brand of each truck and digger pictured on each page, but one cannot help but question the necessity of educating children about a wheel loader, dump truck, excavator, and bulldozer at such a young age. It is unlikely that young children will share in this criticism, since they will likely be busy trying to free the excavator from the pages that contain it; it is up to the adults to decide whether this commercialization is a sufficient reason to look for another selection to add to a child’s book collection.
