Yang-huan’s gentle rhymes about nature find a fitting partner in this gorgeous book illustrated by Hsiao-yen Huang. In sparse prose, this book evocatively describes the perfect homes to suit all sorts of beings. First come the cozy homes for little creatures:
“Leaves are cribs for tiny caterpillars.
Flowers are slumbering beds for butterflies.”
The next lines describe the sadness and anxiety experienced by beings with no home, such as the wind that has nowhere to go and the clouds that weep when the sky darkens. But lucky little boys and girls need not worry about such things, for their parents have prepared “safe and sound” homes for them.
The stylized pastel-colored illustrations of rolling hills, flowing streams, and animals going about their lives are soothing and mesmerizing. Each double-page spread is filled with just enough detail to be of interest without crowding the pages.
