How to Clean Your Room in 10 Easy Steps
by Jennifer Larue Huget, illustrated by Edward Koren
Grades K-2 40 pages Schwartz and Wade May 2010 Hardcover

How to Clean Your Room in 10 Easy Steps is a charmingly illustrated storybook that provides little ones with instructions about how best to put their room in order. Both children and adults will likely be delighted to hear the suggestions put forth, though everyone will immediately realize that this book is far from a “how-to guide” that will result in tidiness and order.

The book includes a number of suggestions presumably geared toward establishing order, such as taking every single thing out of every drawer and closet; packing up old, dirty and broken toys in a box and dragging them into your sister’s room; throwing every single stuffed animal on your bed; and giving your mother grief when she suggests that one of the broken dolls should be discarded.

It also suggests that the best place for old food is in the hamper (since the clothes are dirty anyhow) and saving dust bunnies is important (since they might be useful for future craft projects). This picture book actually had me laughing out loud, particularly upon my recollection of using some of the suggested techniques. Who hasn’t been proud of the sight of one’s room after all of the toys and clothes have been packed into an overflowing closet and the door has been forced shut—right up until the moment the door hinge breaks from the pressure of the items stuffed behind it?

How to Clean Your Room in 10 Easy Steps is a delightful story made even more appealing thanks to Edward Koren's lively illustrations. Those looking for a clear guidance on cleanliness might even be surprised to learn that by putting forth ideas that might be ill-advised, the book just might provide little ones with the motivation they need to tidy up their mess!
