A baby is born one peaceful winter’s night, his birth heralded by a star rising in the East. A small bird’s heart fills up with love when the baby smiles at her, and she soars on wings of joy to spread the word of his birth wide and far, inviting all creatures to come delight in the new birth. The bunny and the fox, the puppy and the sheep all rush to meet this miracle - even the little mouse, who is not sure how far she will be able to travel.
This is a masterfully executed retelling by two seasoned children’s book experts. Author Laura Krauss Melmed has written 13 children’s books, including The Rainbabies and I Love You As Much. Melmed was inspired by the refrain “and heaven and nature sing” in the beloved hymn “Joy to the World” to picture all of God’s creatures, great and small, gathering to celebrate the first Christmas.
If the beautiful watercolor paintings in the book look familiar, it is because they are the work of well-known illustrator Jane Dyer, who has nearly 50 books to her credit, including Mem Fox’s Time for Bed and Rose Lewis’s I Love You Like Crazycakes. Jane Dyer used the stable and woods near her home in western Massachusetts as inspiration for the heartwarming and quietly joyful paintings in this book.
This nativity book is a beautiful treasure, sure to be a welcome addition to any child’s Christmas library.
