I Have Two Homes is a realistic picture book about a little girl named Nina whose parents are divorced.
She remembers the happy times when mom and dad lived together; also the sad times when they argued. When they move to separate homes, her parents were still sad, and Nina misses the parent she was not with at the time.
In time, things get better. Her parents both watch when she jumps into the deep end of the pool, and there are good things about having two homes, like having two birthday parties! I Have Two Homes is not a story about a girl with a single parent; it is a story of a girl with two parents who love her very much, but live in separate homes.
Originally published in Dutch, the beauty of this book lies in its honesty. There is sadness, and it doesn’t go away quickly. Nynke Talsma’s illustrations bring out the emotions of the situation in the characters’ expressions and with the symbols of hearts and the cold of the winter. The bright colors and details including the soft pets, flowers and toys add to the realism.
Told from the little girl’s perspective, this is a story which is important to have available in any classroom or library for the children who live through their parents’ divorce.
Highly recommended.
