A young redheaded boy runs ahead of his mother on a nature walk and climbs a low stone wall. As he walks along the wall by himself, he and his mother talk about his babyhood, when his mother pushed him in a baby stroller, gave him bubble baths in the kitchen sink, and fed him squished peas.
The boy responds to this narrative by stating that now he can dress himself, tie his own shoes, and even take showers on his own. But he wants to be reassured that his mother is still there for him --- an assurance that she is quick to offer.
I'll Be There is a loving and gentle book that offers a disarming glimpse into a child’s first forays into independence. The simple illustrations form a charming accompaniment to this understated and warm-hearted book, a second collaboration by author Ann Stott and illustrator Matt Phelan, who previously teamed up to give us Always.
