The narrator of this board book is a red monster truck named Mudenstein. As he races around the muddy track against a monster truck that looks like a wild bull and another one that looks like a John Deere tractor, he gives his opponents a snaggle-tooth sneer. The crowd of people and animals love him, especially during the freestyle event where he crushes cars and chases the Carcharodontosaurus (a fire–breathing monster truck that eats vehicles) into a cage.
After the monster truck competition is over, the reader sees Mudenstein’s more human side. He takes a break to watch the motorcycle event, and he cheers on his friend, Billy Wrecks, during the demolition derby. The book ends with the vehicles thanking their audience with one last lap. Then they get cleaned up (with a hose) and go to sleep (they all snore).
Staake’s style of artwork appears in the audience. This is where you will find people with green, red, blue and brown skin. They have oddly shaped heads and long, thin arms. Females compete in the races (the pink truck wears a bow in her hair), and the damage on the trucks are covered with bandages or cross-hatching.
Because there are more than a couple words on each page, and the story is full of action, this book will be sought out by toddlers and preschoolers as well.
