All the animals in the woods think the fluffy little owl with the great big eyes is cute. When Rabbit, Squirrel and Fox see him, they can’t resist picking him up and giving him a big hug.
We can see his angry expression as he is being held in their arms, and he is not happy. Baby Owl is furious. “I am NOT cute!” he shouts. He denies his fluffiness and his big baby eyes. He stomps out of the forest in a huff and goes to the only one who will understand him: his mother. She reassures Baby Owl that in her eyes he IS a “huge, scary, sleep, sharp-eyed hunting machine”. But… only until bedtime.
Baby Owl is irresistible. He looks adorable, even when he’s cranky (as most kids do). Allen’s re-issue would be fun to read at a pajama story time or as a bedtime story. Allen has captured the mannerisms and vocabulary of a sensitive, quick-tempered youngster who, at times, needs a little reassurance about his identity.
