This Halloween book starts with A.J. complaining about October 30. He’s already craving candy but is forbidden to eat it. It’s also Mischief Night in his neighborhood, and his plan to soap his enemy’s windows didn’t go quite like he and his friend Ryan had envisioned.
His spirits are lifted, but only temporarily, when he’s able to wear his Darth Bambi costume to go trick-or-treating with the gang. They are prepared (thanks to a map) to receive ‘maximum candy accumulation,’ but when they find out that the mythical Halloween Monster is real, they lose their candy (and their cool).
Their teacher, Mrs. Yonkers, is able to cheer them up when she shows them what her top secret MicroMole 4000 Expandinator is capable of doing to candy. Still, it’s not until the police capture the Halloween Monster (the former Mayor) that A.J. is able to enjoy the rest of his evening—which in this case, involves thinking about next year’s Halloween and convincing his parents to give him a bigger allowance.
The My Weird School Special series (Deck the Halls, We’re Off the Walls!) by Gutnam and Paillot contain several pages of black-and-white illustrations and extras. In It's Halloween, I'm Turning Green! , children can complete a Mystery Maze, a Connect-the-Dots picture and a Find the Difference game. They can read eight pages of Halloween facts, complete a two page Mad-Lib, and a Halloween-themed word search.
Boys and girls who want to read something light yet funny this Halloween will likely appreciate the fun packed into this book.
