Nina Lewis and her mother, Joyce, have lived a nomadic existence for as long as Nina can remember. Everything they own fits in their van and can be moved at a moment’s notice, each new city an adventure. Now, after more than a month on the road, the two find themselves setting up home in snowy Montpelier, Vermont. But when Nina makes friends and becomes an important member of the girls’ basketball team, Mom quickly packs up and heads back on the road.
This time, Utah is their destination and again, as relationships blossom, Mom moves on. Nina becomes increasingly frustrated with her mother’s on-the-go mentality and yearns to settle down to a normal life. When the police show up at their door in California, looking for a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Joyce, Nina begins to realize that “normal” may be farther out of reach than she suspected.
Amy Ehrlich is the author of many wonderful books for children. Joyride is actually a re-titled reprint of her critically acclaimed novel Where It Stops, Nobody Knows, originally published in 1988.
