Just Jazz (Faithgirlz!/Blog On!)
by Dandi Daley Mackall
Ages 9-12 128 pages Zonderkidz August 2006 Paperback

More than anything else, Jasmine wants to be left alone to develop her art. Although successful in their own fields of business, Jasmine’s parents do not accept her talent as a true gift. They discourage her at every turn, as does the high school art teacher, Ms. Bedinger. When Grace Doe, a student in her art class, comments on her talent and her artwork, a new alliance is formed.

Jasmine’s family was not always so prosperous. When Jasmine was small, her family lived in tenement housing and her parents worked at low-paying jobs because of their lack of education. When Jasmine’s brother, DC, was killed in a drive-by shooting, Jasmine’s parents fought their grief by going back to school and getting the education to move their family into a better life. Now Jasmine, her younger brother, Ty, and her sister Kendra (who has Down Syndrome) live in the big house uptown, but they are still not a family. When Jasmine’s friends rally around her to support her talent, they will require only the best from her.

Jasmine’s friends - Storm (the new girl), Grace (the quiet one) and Annie (the pretty one) – figure in other novels of the “Faithgirlz! Blog On” series presenting a realistic picture of high school life and the students and teachers who are a part of every campus. Positive sibling relationships and parental relationships abound in this series, and the girls learn how to embrace the differences among their fellow students and find their way to become a part of the life around them.
