by Hadley Higgenson, illustrated by Maja Andersen
Grades 1-2 46 pages Chronicle Books August 2006 Paperback

Cathleen Corey Keegan Dana, better known as Keeker, is an only child who lives in Vermont, her favorite companion her pony, Plum. Nine-and-a-half-years old, Keeker has very specific interests, and so does the spunky Plum.

In this chapter book from the Sneaky Pony Series, Keeker makes some rash assumptions based on her very active imagination, learning that things are never exactly what they seem. When her mother tells her that nearby Crab Apple Tree Farm has been bought, Keeker is surprised, remembering the farm as dilapidated and rundown, sometimes even scary. She tries to imagine who would buy such a creepy place and decides it must be a witch.

Taking Plum on an expedition to scout the farm, Keeker sees what she is sure is a witch, noticing as well the black smoke rising from a nearby chimney… certainly from the witch’s cauldron! Needless to say, Keeker has let her imagination run away with her, bored by the long winter days and lack of outdoor activity.

In the end, even Plum is happily surprised to find that the witch is a lovely older lady who is making maple syrup in her Sugar Shack, inviting Keeker, her mother and Plum to a delightful meal of pancakes and maple syrup.

Although jumping to conclusions has not been a productive exercise, Keeker learns a valuable lesson about mistaking appearances. Not only do Keeker and Plum have an adventure, they gain a new friend at Crab Apple Hill Farm.
