Grades 3-4 128 pages Starscape November 2009 Paperback

Like Lemony Snicket’s Baudelaire orphans, the keyholders work cooperatively to solve the mysteries that they encounter. Luke, Natalie and Penny were just normal kids from Morgantown, playing, going to school and having fun. When they discover a land of magic just beyond their city’s border, they are commissioned to be keyholders of the border - to help Mr. Leery prevent the magical elements from leaking over into the human realm.

Each of the children is bonded for life with a link; whatever happens to the human will affect the link. Luke’s magic assistant is Dracula, a small dragon. Natalie’s link to the magic world is a rat named Buttercup. Penny’s link is a unicorn named Kirin.

When the three discover Mr. Leery missing and his link, Mo, seriously injured, they unite to discover what can be done to save both of them. Luke uses his math skills, Natalie her special “sensing abilities,” and Penny the knowledge gleaned from all the reading she does to discover together where Mr. Leery is being held and how to get him out of captivity.

The Boggart Queen who rules the world of magic is only happy when everything is going her way. When the three young keyholders team up against her, she will be left wondering how three young kids could outsmart her.

This is a delightful series for elementary students just beginning to read chapter books. The believable characters and the situations they find themselves in will keep young imaginations captive for hours, or at least until the next thing comes along.
