Kit should be filling in the holes he dug in the backyard. Instead, he’s disassembling the stereo to make thinking caps and eating brain food with his best friend, Hoff. Kit has until the evening to get a birthday present for his mother, and if it’s not better than the one his twin sisters are getting her, the consequences will be humiliating and likely public.
The Ugly Necklace is the second title in Michael Townsend’s “Kit Feeny” graphic novel series. Rendered in pen and ink, the illustrations are digitally colored using different shades of orange and gray.
Making appearances in this second story are Kit’s family members, his new friends Hoff and Devon, Principal Knight and Mrs. Squawks, the loud-speaking teacher. Although each adds humor to the storyline, none can surpass the hilarity of the scenes involving Mr. Garthe and his Just Vanilla ice cream stand.
In this book, readers see more of what Kit likes (angry digital monkey alarm clocks) and collects (smelly socks), and how his mind works when he’s solving problems. We know his initial plans will never work, but its fun to see them put into action. Just as with the first book, you can laugh all the way through The Ugly Necklace and come out with a good piece of advice by the end.
Michael Townsend is the author and illustrator of the picture book Billy Tartle in Say Cheese!. He lives in Pennsylvania.
