Late for School
by Mike Reiss, illustrated by Michael Austin
Ages 4-8 32 pages Peachtree July 2009 Paperback

Smitty, who lives in the city, has never been late for school. But on this particular day, after waking up late, he misses his carpool. As the morning progresses, his problems grow steadily bigger. As one outrageous problem after another befalls this conscientious young lad, he becomes more determined than ever to make it to school on time.

From strange weather phenomena to prehistoric glitches and more, Smitty is on a mission and nothing can stop him. But what happens when he actually gets to school finally puts a kink in his plan.

Late for School is one of many children’s books written by Mike Reiss, award-winning head writer for The Simpsons animated television series. This hilarious rhyming rendition of one boy’s frantic race to school exaggerated to the extreme will have both children and parents laughing at the ridiculous misfortune he experiences.

Couple the tale with the elaborate off-kilter illustrations by Michael Austin, and you’ve got one intensely entertaining book on your hands. All in all, this one makes you wonder if some days are just made for sleeping in.
