When a child celebrates a birthday, the party and its preparations provide a number of opportunities to learn to count. Little Discoveries’ Numbers takes advantages of this situation, providing ways to practice these skills through appealing illustrations, flaps to lift, and tabs to pull.
Counting opportunities surface throughout the day of the party, from the counting of the toys in one’s home to the preparation of the party food. Lifting the flaps is necessary to crack the correct number of eggs, and three pieces of chocolate need to be identified to make the four delicious cakes hiding behind the flap that covers the oven.
The five balloons are blown up next, then the doors are opened to reveal the first five guests to arrive. The six presents are opened, and the puppet show starring seven dwarves (who can be viewed on the wheel as it is rotated) provide some entertainment. When the appropriate tab is pulled to reveal all of the dancing guests, it becomes apparent that the event was a success.
Little Discoveries Numbers seizes upon a number of situations that are generally appealing to young readers and uses them as a teaching tool. It is a sweet interactive book that has a educational value and should be a welcome addition to any child’s library.
