Nick Jr. Let's Make Shapes! Book and Blocks: 6 Puzzle Blocks, 6 Puzzles to Solve!

Toddler - Kindergarten 12 pages Chronicle Books March 2006 Board

Little kids' favorite familiar Nick Jr. characters team up for some colorful shape puzzle fun in Let's Make Shapes!

Six is the magic number here - six blocks, six sides on each blocks, six different puzzle possibilities. Lazy Town super-hero athlete Sportacus scores two points with a basketball in the shape of a circle; stuffed friends get comfy in Blue's Room with Frederica's square pillow; Dora and her Abuela share a picnic sandwich, and each half is a triangle.

The Backyardigans search for hidden booty following a treasure map in the shape of a rectangle; Dora's friend twinkling in the sky is una estrella - a star; and Doodleboard draws a balloon for Blue shaped like an oval.

As an early puzzle tool for learning shapes, Let's Make Shapes! has much to recommend it. The puzzle pieces, instead of being flat and difficult for the littlest hands to grasp, are palm-sized blocks - much harder to lose, and multi-faceted for fewer pieces to keep together. The box-style book showing the shapes in both Nick Jr. settings and as finished examples to follow doubles as a carrying case for the blocks (the only improvement might have been a simple latch to keep it closed when not in use and a handle for easier carrying).

And any parent knows that a single versatile toy can be handier to haul around running errands or on longer car trips. With its sister volume Let's Count!, this engaging kit is a winner for older toddlers and preschoolers.
