The Lift and Explore series consists of four oversized board books. Lift and Explore: Oceans (other titles are Dinosaurs, Rainforest and Animals) feature six areas where marine creatures can be found.
Each double-page spread contains three to four sturdy flaps. When open, they reveal close-ups of animals that live in or near oceans around the world.
Learn about the moral eels that live in shipwrecks, or the mammals that make the ocean their home. Brief descriptions introduce children to coral reefs, Antarctica, and the deep ocean.
Below small paragraphs of information are beautiful artworks that children can interact with by exploring the hidden surprises. For example, lift the flap incorporated among the school of fish (the flaps come in a variety of sizes and shapes) to see a color photograph of sardines. Written in bold, black text on the underside of the flap is the description, “Sardines are small fish that eat plankton (tiny animals and plants in the water).” The last two pages of this nonfiction book consist of a question-and-answer section, a glossary, and a “Spot the Difference” activity. I recommend this book to young reluctant readers and children who have an interest in nature.
