Lion in the Living Room
by Caelaach McKinna, illustrated by A.R. Stone
Ages 2-5 24 pages 4RV Publishing July 2008 Paperback

The bright yellow cover of Lion in the Living Room depicts an adult lion and lion cub nuzzling, while in the background, a television shows an image of another lion on what appears to be a nature show. In this book, the animal kingdom has invaded a young girl’s house:
“There’s a lion in the living room,
A leopard on the floor,
A cheetah in my easy chair –
I hear more at the door”
Thus starts this poem about a veritable zoo of birds and beasts taking over the house. Flamingos, elephants and gorillas are lined up at the door; a rhino has taken over the shower, and a hippo occupies the kitchen sink.

The ink-and-watercolor illustrations show realistically rendered animals but are not particularly cute. The illustrations don’t always correspond closely to the text on the page, which may confuse a young child. For example, the text refers to six kangaroos jumping from room to room, but the corresponding illustration shows seven kangaroos. Some of the images, such as those of punk cows with multiple piercings, are amusing.

This is a cute book for a toddler. The catchy, silly, rhyming text begs to be read aloud over and over again and is sure to have young kids giggling. This book may also appeal to parents who suspect that their homes have in fact come to resemble a zoo.
