In this latest installment of the Elephant and Piggie series, Gerald is forced to be brutally honest, and he’s not sure how his good friend will take the opinion he seeks.
Piggie has a new trumpet, and when he plays it for Gerald, the result is pretty terrible. As Gerald puts it, “Piggie sounds like my aunt Molly. With a cold!”
Alas, after the impromptu concert, Piggie pops the much-feared question. “So?! What do you think of my trumpet?” How awkward! After a little stalling Gerald responds, “Piggie. You are my friend. And I am your friend. So, I will tell you the truth. Your trumpet is loud and shiny and you hold it well – But…that was not music.” Oh goodness—there goes the longtime friendship! Well, not exactly…
Unfortunately, while Piggie celebrates with his friends, Gerald feels left out. “I am an elephant…and I do not belong,” he says. Oh dear—now Piggie feels bad, too.
What happens next will leave the young reader not only surprised but also giggling. Making beautiful music isn’t exactly what Piggie really intended to do. No indeed! He had a different goal in mind.
What’s not to like about this series? It is funny, ideal for beginning readers, and the characters (and their wonderful facial expressions) are priceless. No wonder Mo Willems has collected a few Theodore Seuss Geisel Medals for these books.
