Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown
by Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Grades 2-5 96 pages Knopf May 2010 Paperback

Her long rubber gloves, bright yellow apron and vast knowledge of school menus indicate she’s a cafeteria worker, but the Lunch Lady has the ability to do more than just serve healthy lunches.

Using kitchen utensils that have been modified in a secret lab by her co-worker Betty, the Lunch Lady is able to detain criminals like the evil cyborg substitute teacher, the author who kidnaps gym teachers and, in this newest book by Jarrett J. Krosoczka, (Punk Farm, Baghead) a vindictive swamp monster that is determined to ruin everyone’s summer.

Terrence, Dee and Hector already thought being at camp with Milmoe the bully was bad. Now, with all camp activities cancelled until the swamp monster is gone, the Breakfast Bunch friends will have to take matters into the own hands (in this case, Cabin War supplies) and help the Lunch Lady capture the menace that is destroying Camp Fun Times.

Shades of yellow are digitally added to the black-and-white ink illustrations in this fourth book in the Lunch Lady graphic novel series. Well-placed speech bubbles and descriptive labels and headings ensure nothing is missed while reading this story.

Krosoczka has created a comical hero who relies more on brainpower than superpower to make the world a little safer for the students and staff at Thompson Brook School.
