The Lonely Book is the story of an old library book. Once it was brand new, and everybody wanted to check it out. Eventually, the book was largely forgotten, picked up by a child only on occasion.
Until one day, a little girl finds the book and falls in love with it; her father reads it to her every night. But then she, too, forgets about the book for a while. A library volunteer takes it to the basement for the book sale; the book is very lonely. The girl misses the book, too, and in the end, they are reunited at the library book sale.
A wonderful example of personification, The Lonely Book is a perfect choice for thoughtful children who truly adore their books. Librarians will enjoy sparking the idea of “befriending” older books in the minds of children who always want something new. Chris Sheban’s illustrations beautifully extend the story and the magic of the book in the life of a child. The page with the raindrops sitting on the book at the book sale is especially remarkable.
Children will undoubtedly ask for the book about the little girl under the toadstool; if only we knew the title.
