Lulu's Shoes
by Camilla Reid, illustrated by Ailie Busby
Ages 1-4 14 pages Walker Books for Young Readers May 2008 Hardcover

The cover of the charming must-have book entitled Lulu's Shoes boasts that it is “an utterly fabulous interactive book,” and it does not disappoint. If anything, the statement underestimates the sweet and inviting appeal of the story and its illustrations.

The story is about a young girl, Lulu, and her love of shoes. Each page depicts one of her many pairs and provides readers with the opportunity to see and feel the different elements of each. Children will be able to fasten Lulu’s pink shoes, rub the purple sparkles on her mom’s shoes, untie her snow boots, play with the petals on her flowered flip-flops, and feel the soft felt on her bunny slippers. The grand finale comes when a large umbrella can be lifted to reveal Lulu’s all-time favorite pair of shoes, her bright, shiny boots which are perfect for the rain.

Lulu's Shoes is by far one of the most engaging books for children who love shoes and fashion—and I am hopeful that Lulu will be back in the near future for another adventure.
