The lunch lady is a witch. Certainly, children have whispered that line in lunchrooms of schools for as long as there have been lunchrooms in schools. In the case of Deb Lucke’s graphic novel, the lunch lady is indeed a witch. She’s The Lunch Witch .
Large, warty, and imposing with breath that curdles milk, Grunhilda is forced to take a job as a school lunch lady where she encounters the scatterbrained and struggling Madison. When Madison discovers Grunhilda’s secret, the duo are set on a crash course that leads to a conclusion most unlikely for both characters--a friendship.
Lucke draws this graphic novel with grotesque glee. It looks like it was scribbled on a greasy napkin. As is often the case, appearances can be deceiving. The greasy exterior is merely the paper wrapping for a warm-hearted story for anyone who struggles to fit in.
