Every month, Orchard Academy Press distributes a new title of the “My Adventure to…” series of books. This is a great, interesting way to get kids involved in reading and writing. The book titles set the scene, and Williams’ prose leaves blanks for kids to insert descriptive phrases to complete the story. The text appears on the even-numbered pages, leaving a picture frame around a blank page on the odd-numbered pages where kids can illustrate their work.
These small adventure books could be used in a number of ways: a child could work through them alone; or paired up with another child or adult switching off page by page; or a larger group could give out suggestions while one child writes in the answers. When the book is completed, it could be passed around the group, and each child could have the opportunity to illustrate a page.
The target group for this series appears to be second and third graders. Other writers have contributed to this series: Mary Dunn, Mark Lenker, Patricia Gilkerson, Angie Ruth, and Suzanne Slade. I worked through the two books listed with a couple of young friends and had a great time – they are a good activity for babysitters to have at their disposal as well as teachers.
