Maneki Neko: The Tale of the Beckoning Cat
by Susan Lendroth, illustrated by Kathryn Otoshi
Ages 4-8 32 pages Shen's Books July 2010 Hardcover

Susan Lendroth’s interpretation of the Japanese legend of Maneki Neko is a beautifully illustrated picture book which teaches lessons of generosity and welcoming.

A stray cat comes to a poor monk in a tiny temple in a small village. She has the habit of always lifting her paw to polish the dust from her face. The monk and cat become friends; he names her Tama, and together they live a peaceful life living off what little the village people have to share.

One day, a gigantic storm comes over the village and monastery. Tama is out hunting and gets caught in the storm. A noble samurai happens to be riding by; when he sees the beckoning cat at the door of the monastery, he steps in and a blast of lightning throws him to his knees. The cat saved his life.

An honorable man, he showers his riches on the monk and transforms the little monastery into a temple. In turn, the monk shares his new wealth with the village people who supported him for so many years. Tama the cat is renamed Maneki Neko, the beckoning cat. To this day, the cat with its paw raised is a symbol of good fortune in Japan.

Even if they are unfamiliar with Japanese culture and history, children will be delighted by the little white and black cat with its raised paw. Include this story to introduce young readers to legends from around the world. It is also a great stepping stone to the study of world religions. The text lends itself to reading aloud and can be easily retold by young readers - great for teaching sequence and organization.
