Mario knows the Arch ‘n’ Hiss, the Charmed Arm, and the Rocket to Mars. His moves impress his family, but not his friend Isabelle. Her Amazing Move includes more complex twirls and leaps than his Amazing Move.
Not wanting to be outperformed by his friend, Mario decides to start a new hobby: collecting amazing sticks. In this picture book, jealousy fades away when Isabelle finds a way to make Mario feel unique. By the end of the story, they have combined their moves into one maneuver that amazes everyone in the forest.
McElmurry’s (I’m Not a Baby!, Mad About Plaid) gouache illustrations include autumn colors and light blues. Charts and dotted lines indicate the steps involved in various moves.
The repetition in the text makes this a good choice for read-alouds about friendship, dancing, or individuality. The book ends with thirteen facts about squirrels.
