Marta Y La Bicicleta/ Marta and the Bicycle [bilingual]
by Germano Zullo, illustrated by Albertine
Ages 4-8 28 pages Kane/Miller March 2007 Paperback

This charming tale written in Spanish tells of a cow named Marta who lives in a quiet village, watching the train roar by with the other cows. One day she watches a local bicycle race, the riders soaring by on their two-wheeled craft, one after another. Marta is fascinated. Later that night, Marta dreams of the train, but the cars are filled with the other cows and Marta is in the last car, with a bicycle of her own.

The next day, Marta finds a broken bicycle in a heap of trash and rescues it, cleaning up the damage and teaching herself to ride; she has hopes of participating in the race with the other contestants. After many scrapes and spills, Marta is ready to compete and signs up with all the villagers on the day of the race. What an amazing sight - a cow racing alongside the other riders with their bright helmets. But an ever bigger surprise awaits. Marta wins the race! Suddenly she is famous, the crowds cheering for the happy winner.

With colorful pages and whimsical illustrations, this humorous tale of a cow who dreams of winning the big bicycle race is a happy journey through the world of fantasy where hard work proves that dreams do come true.
