Children’s book author Barbara Park has penned a story about the anticipated birth of a child from a new perspective, rather than from the traditional vantage point of a mother, father, sibling or other relative eagerly awaiting the expansion of their family. Specifically, in Ma! There's Nothing to Do Here! , Park tackles the impending birth of a baby through the eyes of a newborn ready to take the world by storm.
The story centers on an unborn child outlining the shortcomings of his current living quarters and his hopes for future accommodations. The soon-to-be-born child expresses his sense of boredom, which seems perfectly reasonable based on his limited view, the lack of playmates and toys, and the inability to travel to the park or the zoo.
After charmingly alerting readers to current conditions in the womb, Park has her character tackle his imminent birth, allowing him to express his hopes as to what will be waiting for him upon his arrival. His wish list includes simple requests - a crib, diapers, and some shampoo.
Ma! There's Nothing to Do Here! is a sweet story about a baby preparing for its entry into the world which, for him (or her), cannot come soon enough. The simple text along with the vibrant illustrations makes this book one that should earn its rightful place among the must-read books to read, share, and enjoy again and again.
