Metal Man
by Aaron Reynolds, illustrated by Paul Hoppe
Grades K-4 28 pages Charlesbridge February 2010 Paperback

It’s hot and steamy in the city, but Devon doesn’t care: he’s off to see the metal man.

“Whatcha makin’?” Devon asks, but the Metal Man never says. Instead, he wants to know what Devon sees. For here, in the metal shop, Devon always gets it right - not like at school. And today something is different. Today, the metal man is ready to find out what Devon can make.

Metal Man is a lyrical tale based on art appreciation. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Author Aaron Reynolds’ bluesy text and words pull readers directly into the spark-filled world of welding, where the “torch’ll tear you up like a thousand killer bees.”

With heavy brush strokes and limited color variation, Paul Hoppe’s mixed media illustrations fit the style and mood perfectly. In this day and age of reduce, reuse and recycle, this book bodes just as well for those looking for a “green” theme.
