Another in the “Playtime With Little Nye” picture book series, this newest adventure finds Little Nye and his friends Nella, Lester and Gracie outside playing in the snow. Lester decides to make a big snowball, so he begins rolling a lump of snow along the ground.
Soon the snowball is so big that Lester decides to give it a name. “This is Osbert. He’s my snow friend,” he says. But it is still just a large lump of snow. Gracie, Little Nye and Nella decide to add to Lester’s “creation” by adding stick arms, some eyes, and even a hat and scarf. Now Osbert looks like a friend!
With night rapidly approaching, the friends leave Osbert outside and go in the house for some hot cocoa. As he peers out the window, Lester sees the snow begin to fall. “There is millions of snow,” he observes. But his new friend doesn’t mind, because Osbert loves snow!
This is a pretty simple story, but toddlers don’t demand a complicated plot, and the illustrations make it come alive. With a month or two of winter still ahead, this would be a good book to read aloud before a blazing fire on a snowy night.
