Her desk and chair are piles of books, and she can stuff over twenty books in a child’s schoolbag. Miss Brooks, the librarian, believes there is a book out there for everyone - even for a first-grader who has given up on books.
Missy, who resembles a tomboy, finds fairy books too flowery, train books too clickety and dog books too furry. She can’t even complete a classroom assignment properly because she doesn’t find a poem she likes enough to share. Miss Brooks is an inspiration for all those people who like to introduce books to others - but in this book, Missy’s mom helps Missy become a reader, too.
Barbara Bottner’s (Bootsie Barker Bites) story is narrated by Missy, with some dialogue written for Miss Brooks and Missy’s mom. The length of text varies on each page and contains a section where the reader can snort.
Michael Emberley’s (Maybe a Bear Ate It!) pencil, ink and watercolor illustrations show Miss Brooks dressed up as a funny Runaway Bunny, Hungry Caterpillar and jack o’lantern. When not celebrating the holidays or a book character, she’s dressed in funky clothes and accessories.
This book proves that a passion for books is contagious. Miss Brooks can make books come to life with her costumes and her assignments, but it’s her passion that connects with the students. This book makes an excellent read-aloud for children in preschool to grade one.
