Mommies! is a board book for little children, and I suggest the younger the better since the text consists merely of words strung together, often in an awkward manner.
It starts with “Shower shower mommy” (punctuated but not a full sentence) along with a woman watering some plants. Behind the flap are other words (“Flower power baby!”) with the picture of a flower. Similarly, “Shoe shoe mommy” is linked with “peekaboo baby” and a woman blowing bubbles with a cat next to the text “Bubble bubble mommy” can be lifted to reveal “Double trouble babies!” with an illustration of two babies in a pool alongside two cats.
While board books are appealing to young children, and including flaps that encourage interaction adds to this appeal, this format does not necessarily translate into a literary success. Perhaps Mommies! is targeting little ones who are just learning to piece words together, but the problem is that this book does not provide the proper instruction.
