Mommy Loves
by Anne Gutman & Georg Hallensleben
ages 0-4 14 pages Chronicle Books May 2005 Board book

All mommies love their babies. That’s the premise of Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben’s adorable board book Mommy Loves. The short book goes through different types of mommies in the animal kingdom and shows how the mommies love their babies. These include mommy polar bears loving their cubs and mommy hedgehogs loving their hoglets. Not only does this book help young children learn what different babies in the animal kingdom are called, but it also helps them with counting since each consecutive page counts up. For example, the first page has a kangaroo and her one joey. The second page has a polar bear and her two cubs, etc.

This is a short, easy to read book with bright, beautiful illustrations. It should keep a baby’s attention well and would also be a good book to start with when children start reading on their own. Although some of the words may be a little difficult for a beginning reader, there is enough repetition that it should be relatively easy to learn.

This is the perfect book for moms to start reading to their children early in life. There is also a companion book by the same authors entitled Daddy Cuddles that would work well for dads to read to their young children. Both are endearing, sweet books young children will be sure to love.
