This board book has diecut shapes on every page. They appear overtop the yellow, red, green, and blue square and rectangular wood-grain blocks. “What are you building? What can it be?”
On the lefthand page are two diecut circles; on the righthand page is a car diecut hole. When the page is turned, children will see two different-looking cars made with the blocks.
It’s an ingenious design, although I think the colors are a little drab. But in no way do the faded colors interfere with the enjoyment of this book.
Other vehicles included in the story are a bus, a train, a ship, a plane, and a space shuttle. On the last page, the author asks, “What else can you build?” It would be interesting to hear what a child would say!
As the book nears the end, new shapes are introduced. Triangles make up the front and back of the ship and the wings of the plane. The circles can be wheels or windows; rectangles can be stacked high to be smokestacks or placed side by side to be doors.
Many of the sentences have sound effects (ssssh, beep, choo choo, whizzz), and when said with enthusiasm, they add enjoyment to the book. Children could play with their own blocks while listening to this book.
