Everyone knows the opening lines to the old nursery rhyme, Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush. But thanks to author/illustrator Iza Trapani, we finally get to learn the rest of the song, told here in a delightful and utterly charming book kids and adults will adore. Her lively retelling of this classic rhyme will have you singing along in no time.
As the song and the story unfold, the lyrics tell us about a woman with a garden. Seems she has lots of unwanted visitors in her garden, such as mice, raccoons, even deer. Yet no matter what she does, she can’t keep them out. No amount of chicken wire, fencing or netting seems to work, so she finally decides to go with the flow and get in on the song.
The watercolor illustrations are whimsical and fun, and the rhythmic beat to the words will have kids singing along. The final page of the book offers the musical notes and entire lyrics. I read this book to my son, and before long, we were indeed singing along and laughing over the antics of the “pests” that were going “round the mulberry bush.”
