Jamie Lee Curtis is perhaps best known as Laurie Strode, the high school student terrified by the specter of Michael Myers in the classic horror film Halloween.
But she is also a renowned writer of children's books, including My Mommy Hung the Moon, Big Words For Little People, Is There Really a Human Race?, It's Hard To Be Five, and many others.
In her newest collaboration with illustrator Laura Cornell, My Brave Year of Firsts , she tackles the subject of first encounters. These include riding a bike, working in a restaurant, even getting your first bee sting. It is a unique take on the subject. Here's a brief excerpt:
I tried for the first time to taste my mom's truffles that apparently come from when pigs use their snuffles.
She put them in pasta with broccoli stems, "Try it," she said, but I'll NEVER like them.
There are some fun examples of alliteration, and using a word like "snuffles"
to rhyme with "truffles" (and meant to indicate the nose) is quite charming.
This is a fun little book for children ages 4-8.
