It’s tough to limit the books you select for infants to those that are in black and white, even though experts suggest that these are the only colors they can differentiate. This makes the black-and-white My Animals such a welcome surprise.
This board book has a fuzzy cover followed by a number of chunky pages showcasing different animals: a crocodile, frog and hippopotamus are followed by a fish rabbit and elephant. From there, readers are treated to a sheep, dog, panda and penguin, then a giraffe and tiger. The book concludes with a bear, zebra, pig and cow.
Each illustration is more cheerful than the one that precedes it, and there is small cut-out of a circle that shows up page after page. Children will not be able to resist inserting their small fingers within it to pull the pages back and forth.
My Animals is a treat and a wonderful way to provide an infants and very young children a sneak peek into the colorful world of reading that awaits them.
