Ages 9-12 160 pages Harcourt April 2007 Hardcover

Your best friend moving away can feel like the most painful thing in the world, especially when you’re left all alone with a big bully and her entourage to deal with. That is exactly the situation Ida May faces in My Last Best Friend.

Vowing never to have another best friend again (how else can you avoid such pain?), she tries to ignore the new girl in town. This should be an easy task, as the bossy bully Jenna Drews has latched onto her and has no desire to include I-duh in her circle of friends. Stacy Merriweather, the new girl, goes out of her way, however, to include Ida in the girls’ plans.

Ida soon finds herself intrigued with Stacy and guesses there is more to her than she is letting on. She soon forms a secret friendship with her through notes hidden on the school grounds. Afraid to reveal her identity (due to possible repercussions from Jenna), she avoids Stacy’s requests for her true name.

Just as school begins to feel less torturous things, begin to unravel for Ida May. Could her worst nightmare possibly come true?

My Last Best Friend is a delightful and heartbreaking look at the struggles of friendship, the pains along life’s journey, and the ability to bounce back and find light in what may otherwise appear to be an utterly dismal experience. Full of humor and the lessons of life this is certainly a book that many girls will relate to and enjoy.
