Nick and Norah meet each other in unusual circumstances. She's hanging out at a bar against her will to keep her friend from doing something stupid. He's part of the evening's entertainment. He turns to her with the immortal line, "Would you mind being my girlfriend for the next five minutes?" But what begins as a quick ploy to make an ex-girlfriend jealous turns into one wild night, the most unusual "first date" ever.
Nick and Norah's relationship is surprisingly realistic. Now that's not to say that every teenager is a New York hipster kid who can get into hot clubs because her dad is a record exec. But this isn't a movie romance where everything always works out perfectly. There are bumps in the road and moments when you may wonder if things are actually going to work out, or if Nick and Norah are fated to remember the night they "almost" got together.
Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, unique authors in their own rights, are a formidable co-authoring team. They create two characters who are instantly interesting, with authentic voices, making us care about their problems, from insecurity to two imposing exes. Nick and Norah experience the kind of unforgettable, memory-making, potentially life-altering night we all wish we could have. But if we can't have one of our own, being along for the ride is almost as good as being there.
