It's Not the Stork!: A Book About Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families and Friends features a cartoon bird and bee having a conversation about where babies come from. Their light and amusing conversation provides a counterpoint to the much more serious and earnest instruction going on in the main panels of the book on the bodies of girls and boys, sex, pregnancy and childbirth, to name just a few of the subjects covered in this comprehensive and accessible book.
The comic-strip artwork and simple, to-the-point text together help to educate children on their bodies: the physical differences between boys and girls, both on the outside and the inside; appropriate and inappropriate touching; and how a baby is made and grows inside its mother’s body. Many potentially controversial topics featured in the author’s earlier books are left out here, so parents who are uncomfortable with exposing their children to topics such as masturbation or abortion can rest easy in their selection of this much tamer book.
It's Not the Stork! is honest and informative without being clinical or confusing. It can provide the perfect starting point for that “birds and bees” conversation between parents and children. It is hard to imagine a clearer or friendlier sex-ed guide for pubescent and pre-pubescent children (the book is labeled for ages 10 and up).
