“Safe and snug in his leafy bed,
Baby Otter is rocked to sleep.
To Ocean’s child we say good night.
Good night, little otter, good night.”
A pregnant Inuit mother and her toddler child are paddling together in a small boat at dusk, observing the “children of Ocean” as they settle in for a night’s rest. As the mother and child encounter baby otters, walruses, puffins and other animals being snuggled to sleep by their mothers, they bid each one goodnight.
Powerful and hypnotic illustrations by Caldecott medalist David Diaz bring the beauty of Alaska and the unique denizens of the northern oceans vividly to life. Each two-page spread reveals a different mother-child animal pair preparing to call it a night. The animals and the batik-inspired backgrounds are drawn in lush and captivating color and detail.
The gentle, loving and poetic text and stunning artwork together create a book that simply sings with a deep love for the Earth and all its inhabitants. What a treasure.
