This oversize board book is one of four titles in the Odd One Out series. To find the correct animals in 8 9 and 10 , children will have to know the numbers from one to ten and have an understanding of what squinting means (in this case, being cross-eyed) and what kinds of items people bring to the beach.
Each double-page spread asks four questions. On the first two pages, the reader is asked, “Who is standing on 1 leg and who on 2?” “Who caught a fish?” and “Who is going to the beach?” After they look carefully at all the pink flamingos, they will see who tucks up their legs and the one bird that is holding a kite under its wing. On the camel page, readers need to identify the camels with two or three humps, the one that “lost his curls”, and the one who is dressed for the beach.
Some clues are camouflaged well. The black bowtie on the cat’s tail is hard to find because it blends in with the black background. Other clues are difficult to interpret. Why would the cat being carrying a black stick to the beach? Is it his towel? If it is a towel, it’s not black on the final page. In one instance, the answer doesn’t match the artwork. The cat identified as licking his whiskers isn’t really licking his whiskers. He’s licking his lips. His tongue isn’t close to his whiskers.
Still, there is a lot to look for on the page, and adults can extend this story by adding their own questions such as “Which dog is looking left or right” and “Why are the dogs wagging their tails?” Pair this book with Happy Angry Sad, also by Guido van Genechten.
