This second book in the Odd One Out series will have children examining details, making choices and learning opposites.
Pink-cheeked elephants appear on the first double-page spread. They all look similar because they were created with a potato stamp, but the odd ones out can be spotted with careful inspection. Three questions direct the reader: ”Who has a little curly tail? Who is big and who is small? And who is ready to go to a party?” The pages that follow include penguins, crocodiles, zebras and pigs. Although every double-page spread has only one party guest, the pages include different pairs of opposites. Children will be asked to distinguish between the dirty and the clean fish, and the asleep and the awake owls.
It’s no surprise all the party animals meet on the last page for birthday cake, but what is surprising is that one guest is missing. The fish carrying the streamers earlier in the book never arrives at the party. His streamers are there, but he is not.
This oversized board book will work well with a group of one to four children. It’s interactive, silly (find the zebra who just went to the bathroom) and easy to pair with a craft. After the story, children could make their own mosaics with a potato stamp.
