Ages 2-6 32 pages Atheneum August 2011 Hardcover

The main characters here are two cats—one in the city, one in the country—and author Laura Godwin explores how similar they are. Nocturnal in nature, both cats like to prowl about after dark and chase mice. But when the weather turns nasty, they quickly head for the comforts of their respective homes.

The illustrations picture the two felines doing cat things like yawning, stretching, leaping and twitching their tails. By moonlight, one kitty meanders across a roof while the other carefully walks along the top of a fence in a field. When it comes to hunting, they both zig, zag, and dash after their prey.

But when they hear “CRASH! BOOM!” and see a flash in the dark sky, they know rain is coming and that it’s time to scoot home. What do they do when they get there? Why, take a cat snooze, of course!

Even if you don’t love cats or own one, this fun book will show children that no matter where cats live—city or country—they have many traits and things in common. If you and your family do love felines, One Moon, Two Cats is a must-read!
